Wednesday Post Random/Book Review- The Hunger Games Trillogy - SPOILERS-*****

SPOILERS BELOW!!!!!

I had not planned on reading this trilogy. I don't usually like books or movies like this. In fact, a similar story to the "Hunger Games" is a Japanese Film called "Battle Royal" It was created before the hunger games and has a very similar concept.

In Battle Royal a group of...I guess they are high school students... is gassed to sleep and placed in an "arena" when they awake they have each been equipped with a "necklace". The use of the necklace is shown when some students try to attack the teacher in charge of the "games" the necklace begins to beep and then explodes.

When we heard about the Hunger Games becoming a movie, we (my girlfriend and I) looked up information about the book. She had seen Battle Royal before and was a little frustrated that an idea would be stolen. We both decided not to read the books or watch the movie.

Now there is a saying "Don't judge a book by its cover." The same can be applied to movie trailers as well. We watched the trailer... and then we had to watch it. The movie surprised us by being very riveting, and even with all the death of--they can only be called children--tributes, the movie was fairly tactful.

There were similarities, and there were also a lot of differences.

After watching the movie, we had to read the book. We bought the first book and my Girlfriend read it first. I was still holding out, hoping that she wouldn't like it so that I wouldn't be drawn into such an upsetting story. She loved it. I read it. A month later we purchased the other two as e-books.

I read the first chapter of the second book and then couldn't go on. I already had a good idea what was going to happen before I began and I didn't want to know. Chris, My GF finished the two of them in probably less then a week. maybe a little longer. I really held off from reading them because after finishing the last one, she cried in her sleep (though she is convinced that I dreamed it.)

The first book was amazing, it kept me hooked till the very end. It pulled me away from two other books that I was trying to finish before school started back up (I won't be able to do that, school starts on monday!) I didn't believe that they would actually kill off such innocent characters that we had so gotten to love. Even when I knew what was going to happen, I didn't expect what I read. They kill off the ones that touch our hearts the most.

Rue's death broke my heart. I foolishly believed that hers would be the most heart breaking death.

The second book leaves you with a steep cliff hanger and then the third ends horribly. My eyes are still red and puffy from what I have JUST read. (Spoiler for the end of the trilogy,) They killed Prim. and it really broke my heart.

I cannot say that I didn't love the books. I really did love them. They bring you into the story so well. You feel everything with them. But I don't know if I will ever read them again. I don't think I can handle the pain again.
